For this “Core Skill: Information Literacy,” I have chosen an artifact from my 12-week
course in ENG-112. Named, “Implementing a Radiation Dose Monitoring System in CT Scans,”
this artifact was 7-pages long and written in APA format. For this essay, the rubric required
students to write a problem and solution paper. To stay on track with my radiography plans, I
chose to discuss the increased ionizing radiation from computed tomography (CT) scans and
providing a solution and implementation. Here, I was challenged to use my previous knowledge
of ionizing radiation and apply it to this topic. While researching details of computed
tomography exams, I learned of solutions from Japan, which allowed me to expand perspectives
on the issue. The making of this artifact took well over a week, and I truly dedicated my time to
crafting a detailed paper. Reflecting on this essay, I remember having a different topic, which
focused on Magnetic Resonance Imaging. However, after reading more on other modalities and
implementation of a solution, the best choice was computed tomography.  

 

So, after discussing radiation dose problems in CT scans, I analyzed the use of the radiation dose monitoring system. I feel that this artifact was very strong in source evaluation, which was one of my goals when writing this paper. With thorough research from various databases such as NC Live and the National Library of Medicine, I was able to gather the necessary information and use it valuably to find the proper solution. For my second goal, I focused on synthesizing information to achieve a purpose. By incorporating the previous goal of source evaluation, I was able to organize the details of the essay in a manner that followed my passion for radiography.
Putting together this artifact was challenging for me. I spent a significant amount of time
researching the right topic and its coordinating solution. I believe that through skills learned in
ENG-111 and more in ENG-112 aided me in researching and writing this paper.
