ORAL COMMUNICATION
The learner will exchange ideas and information with others using the spoken word in a manner effective and appropriate for the intended audience.
For Oral Communication, I have chosen an artifact from my public speaking class. This 8-week course was COM-231, and I took it online over the summer of 2024. For my first recorded speech, which was an informational one, I chose to discuss meal prepping. As the medical field is one of my passions, I felt that speaking on a topic related to health was a perfect way to showcase my interest! To prepare for the speech, I researched throughout the NC Live database, as well as create a graphic presentation. In this oral communication video, titled “Meal Prep 101,” I spoke on how to meal prep, where to start, and a guide to sticking to the plan. In 4 minutes, and 13 seconds, I was able to define the term, show the benefits, and guide viewers to creating an impactful meal prep. As I reflect on this assignment, I realize that I did not have much trouble coming up with this speech as I was genuinely interested in the topic. I felt that I was strong in my articulation and delivery.
For my first goal, I chose to focus on mastering delivery by speaking clearly. Usually, I am a fast-paced talker, leading for some words to be less enunciated. However, with the requirements of the speech being clear delivery, I slowed down and emphasized words and phrases. By rerecording this speech after originally delivering it in class, I was able to use feedback from my professor and work on this goal.
For my second goal, I focused on citing sources more accurately and fluently. While delivery of the speech was vital, it was also important that I indicated where I got my research from. To do this, I spoke at the beginning of my speech that I researched throughout the NC Live database as well as from a Spotify podcast. Then, throughout my speech, I referenced my sources orally. To easily do so, I put in the author of the researched work on my presentation.
Again, by using feedback from my professors, I successfully achieved this goal.
In the oral communication core skill, I learned to accurately deliver a speech, both in expression and sourcing. Now, I apply these skills that I learned in the course and artifact to deliver speeches and even interviews. With this, I take the time to speak and make sure that what I am saying is accurate.
