MEDIA'S IMPACT ON GENDER ROLE STEREOTYPES ASSIGNMENT

For this “Program Learning Outcomes: Social-Scientific Literacy,” I chose an artifact
from my Introduction to Sociology class. Named SOC-210, this course lasted for 12-weeks and was taken fully online. For this artifact, I chose to reflect on an essay I wrote near the end of the semester. In this paper, which I named “Media’s Impact on Gender Role Stereotypes
Assignment,” I analyzed gender stereotypes and advertisements in relation. After defining
gender role stereotypes and how it influences male and female thoughts, beliefs, decision-
making, behaviors, and actions, I further analyzed stereotypical media for both genders. A
strength of mine in this assignment were the advertisements I chose to explore. In one ad, the target audience are men who shave, with an implication that the razor is catered for a man’s use.
Similarly, the other ad’s target audience was also for men. However, in the second ad, the focus was a female actor portrayed in a sensual way. Finally, in the last part of the assignment, I highlighted on perception of North America in regard to how men and women interaction here.

For the first goal, I selected “Points of View: Social, Psychological, Anthropological.”
Keeping this goal in mind when completing this artifact, I did face the challenge of trying to
fulfill it. However, by watching a documentary based in Switzerland (as required by the
assignment) and applying critical thinking on perspectives, I was able to achieve this goal.

For the second goal, I chose to focus on economic issues. Also a slight struggle, I managed to pull through when talking about the advertisements. To ensure that products are being sold,

companies maximize their media elements to reach their target audience.

Despite these struggles, I enjoyed writing this paper because I got to explore gender stereotypes, its role in the media, and how it may or may not look in other parts of the world. Overall, I was educated on the social-science aspect of the SOC-210 course.
